Orthopeadic Trauma & Fractures hospital in PCMC

Physical trauma can be caused due to an external impact strong enough to damage the bone. The force generated due to trauma can lead to minor to major bone fractures. The type of fractures ranges from simple fractures that can be treated with a splint to complex fractures that require surgery.

The most common reasons which lead to traumatic fractures include:

Road Accidents: It is estimated that every person who drives a bike or a car is sure to face a road crash accident leading at least twice in his/her life.

Sports Accidents: Athletes are involved in sports like football, cricket, basketball, sprinting, etc. are always at risk of facing direct impact injuries like falling, twisting or turning accidents which can potentially cause fractures.

Age: Many bone fracture cases occur due to old-age and irrelevant accidents too. As we grow older, our bones start losing their agility and strength, making them vulnerable to fracturing even without any accidents but mere wear and tear.

Systemic Diseases: Some diseases also cause brittleness in bones, ultimately leading to unforeseen fractures.

Types of Bone Fractures

There are four fundamental categories of bone fractures based on the internal and external appearance of the bone after a traumatic accident:

Closed fracture: when the bone cracks but does not tear through the muscles or skin hence being invisible to the naked eye.

Open fracture: when the bone snaps in two or more parts and tears through the skin, making a visible cut on the surface. It might rebound into the skin, but the skin tear remains.

Displaced fracture: when a bone moves from its original alignment with the adjacent bones.

Non-displaced fracture: when the bone cracks but does not move from its original aligned position.

Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgeries are performed to try and rearrange the cracked or broken bone back into its original structure, or replace it with the help of synthetic elements like screws, plates, rods, wires, springs and prosthetic implants. Depending on the severity of the injury, either local, spinal or general anesthesia may be used.

The surgeon will then make necessary incisions over the skin to realign the bone to its structure and may also use supportive elements such as screws, plates, and rods to fortify the alignment. These structures supports can either be temporary or permanent.

Bone grafts may also be used if the bone is shattered into fragments during the traumatic accident. The damaged blood vessels will also be repaired. The incisions will be closed with sutures, and the operated part will be put into a dressing cast to limit its movement until the bone recovers.

The recovery time will vary depending on the type of trauma, and a good surgeon will help you understand what precautions to take to recover from the fracture promptly.
